Title:  Busy place
Description:  Amtrak 763 pushes the Southwest Chief into the station, as a Conrail SW works the Post Office. The SDP40Fs were common power on western trains, though they were being steadily replaced by F 40s. The SDP40Fs had problems on a couple of western roads, most notably SP, for tracking issues and derailments. The Santa Fe didnt seem to have these problems, however, and did not restrict them. ATSF had experience with this type power, as it had FP 45s on its passenger trains, and seemed to know how to run them without incident.

Description:  Amtrak SDP40F 511 at about 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1973 (c/n 72694-12) it was retired around 1984 and traded to the AT&SF (a total of 18 SDP40F's were traded for 43 Santa Fe SSB1200's and CF7's). This unit was rebuilt during April 1985 into ATSF SDF40-2 5251, later BNSF 6961. The SDF40-2's were retired by the BNSF in 2002 and stripped for parts.

Description:  During the 1980 Christmas Season, Amtrak regularly leased Southern Pacific SD40T-2 units to assist pairs of SDP40F's on very long SUNSETS, and here is SP 8564 - along with Amtrak 511 and 518 - accelerating a westbound train out of Avondale Yard. By this time, most of the other western long-distance trains had been re-equipped with SUPERLINERS; so Amtrak was able to run 15-car SUNSETS, which was still steam heated, using some of the cars released from these other trains. Within a few months, the SUNSET itself would also receive SUPERLINERS, and it would never again operate with this many cars unless something REALLY special was going on!

EMD built the 512 (s/n 72694-12) in June 1973 and delivered it in the phase one bloody nose paint scheme. After only a few years service it was traded back to EMD and most of its internal components were used in construction of F40PHR 373.
