This is a switching move across either Alton Junction or Fort Wayne Junction (depending on who you talked to) and the track has recently been rebuilt. Think they used enough rail joiners? Description:  Amtrak SDP40F 508 facing inbound at Alton Junction (about 22nd Street) in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I might speculate that this was a move to turn the locomotives around. If so, the next step was to move through Union Interlocking Wye and return to this location with the cabs facing outbound.

In the background Santa Fe SD45 5566 awaits a signal to proceed south as GP39-2 3648 sits on the house track with a work train. EMD built the 509 (s/n 72694-10) in June 1973. It became EMDX 218 in blue paint. (Date of photo approximate, roster information from http://www.textfiles.com/fun/amtrak1.txt)

Amtrak SDP40F 509
Title:  Amtrak SDP40F 509
Description:  Amtrak SDP40F 509 waiting for clearance at 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The only E-units I can identify are 444 (in the middle) and 421 (on the right), could not identify the rear-facing E. Number 509 was built June 1973 (c/n 72694-10) and was traded back to EMD for parts use in the construction of F40PH 372. It has skid-mounted steam generators, rumored (but never fully substantiated, track maintenance was also suspect) to have been part of the derailment fault of these particular locomotives. The steam generators themselves were not at fault, but the location of the tanks that supplied the water may have played a role. It was suggested that the location of the tanks inside the rear of the locomotive against the outer walls was a problem when entering a curve at high speed. The water tended to go straight, pulling the rear of the locomotive out of the curve and against the outer rail. This in turn was transmitted to the following car, generally a lightly loaded baggage car, which then derailed. Earlier conclusions focused on the hollow bolster truck, but freight locomotives had used the same truck design without problem. The problem may have disappeared by itself had Amtrak removed the steam generators and replaced them with HEP power plants, as had been the plan from the beginning, but instead most of the SDP40F's were traded back to EMD and scrapped, with components used in the construction of the F40PH's. The bridge in the background is the ICG's Saint Charles Air Line.

For these locomotives to be of any use to Amtrak in the near future, they will have to be turned, and the quickest way at this location would be to wye them through Union Avenue Interlocking, so we are probably looking at a typical 'hurry up and wait' situation until traffic clears.

Amtrak 509
Title:  Amtrak 509
Description:  NORMAN OK Oct 8 1979 -- With a contrail of the competition overhead the last Southbound Lone Star to comes to a stop. The train was discontinued by Amtrak a week earlier but a lawsuit forced Amtrak to run this much-reduced version of trains 15 and 16. In this photo Amtrak Agent Charlie Bandt (left) is at trackside to bid farewell to passenger service and his job. Years later passenger service was restored when the state subsidized an Oklahoma City to Fort Worth and return train named the Heartland Flyer. Efforts are still underway to extend service to Kansas City.

Title:  AMTK 190 - AMTK 509
Description:  AMTK 190 - AMTK 509 whizzing around the western part of the Vancouver wye as she comes off the Columbia River train bridge and slipping into Vancouver Amtrak Station in the driving rain in the middle of the night (at least its dark enough for it - amazing its only 4:20 / 16:20 in the early, wet winter evening. Concrete silos serving rail-river traffic in the left background, the bridge itself right background (The green light is on the bridge itself for river traffic - when it swings, the light aims up/down river, otherwise its all red along the span. I presume the green also shows the rail traffic when its been properly aligned and locked into position to prevent any unauthorized river traffic from the rail lines.) for a quick stop before proceeding northward.
