Both are EFS-17M's built by EMD in 1957 and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. Visible at the far right is PRR engine #8575, an ES-15M built by EMD in 1953 rated at 1,500 horsepower. Description:  New Portage. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train near Foot-of-Ten on the New Portage Branch Line west of Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 14 June 1964. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9683, #7255, and another "F" unit whose number is not recorded. All were built by EMD. #9683 is an EH-15 built in 1949 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #7255 is an EFS-17M built in 1959 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. Total head-end horsepower: 4,750. They are pulling a 77-car freight train up the New Portage Branch Line to Gallitzin, where it will merge with the mainline and head West. Most of the cars in this train have just been produced at the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop in Hollidaysburg.

They are travelling down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve and through Altoona to the Enola Yards with a 117-car mixed-cargo freight train. The caboose is #477484.

They are about to pass under the 4th Street Bridge and into the Eastbound Receiving Yard with a fully-loaded coal train. The westbound train of empty hopper cars pulled by engine #6046 is on the next track over. Visible in the distance is the 7th Street Bridge; beyond the Bridge are some of the PRR 12th Street Car Shop buildings. Description:  It's Friday night and the equipment from train #987 is put away at Pemberton. Minutes later, the operator at Cooper will gives C&E Extra 7268 North (the CB-21 with GP-9 7268) a K card for a Clear-block to State Street in Pavonia. The Pemberton Branch represented the last manual block passenger operations on the PRR proper (the LIRR and PRSL excepted).

Description:  Byerly. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Fred Byerly that was taken in East Peoria, Illinois, c. 1967. The photographer is not identified. Photo Caption: "EMD GP-9B #3808, 1750-hp, at East Peoria, Ill." Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3808-B and #7269. Both are EFS-17M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #3808-B was built as number "7183-B" in November of 1957 and renumbered "3808-B" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. #7269 was built in December of 1959 and was the very last GP-9 purchased by the PRR. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Diesels On The Pennsylvania" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (819-53).
