KCS Special
Title:  KCS Special
Description:  Louisiana promoted the 100th anniversary of Louis Armstrong's birth - and the origins of jazz - by operating a 4-day rail tour over the Kansas City Southern from Shreveport to New Orleans. (Armstrong was actually born on 4 August 1901, so the train was a year early!) The tour showcased different styles of Louisiana music and culture for magazine travel writers, and its arrival in New Orleans coincided with the start of the 2000 Jazz and Heritage Festival. Here was the train at Gonzales with FP9’s 1 and 2, an office car, two support cars, another office car, a diner and a third office car.

AKDN GP30 3018
Title:  AKDN GP30 3018
Description:  Acadiana Railway GP30 3018 had been built in February 1963 as Denver & Rio Grande Western 3018. It was retired on 7 May 1996 and sold by the Union Pacific to Metro East Industries at East St. Louis, Illinois, in 1997. From there, it moved on to Larry's Truck Electric Service in Ohio before February 1998 and then to the Acadiana Railway in December 1998. The Acadiana had LTE repaint it into this green and yellow paint scheme, which was inspired by a former Chicago & North Western GP7 which the railroad had previously purchased from LTE. This was the Acadiana's second GP30; their first one was former Union Pacific 701 which they acquired in 1993.

Description:  Acadiana Railway GP30 701 was built in February 1963 as Union Pacific 701, frame no. 7648-2. This was the fourth UP diesel to wear this number; the previous examples were a Fairbanks-Morse ERIE-BUILT A-unit from March 1948 until February 1953, a GP7 from February until November 1953 and a GP20 from July 1960 until December 1962. The 701 was one of the last GP30’s on the UP roster. It was retired on 28 July 1989 and was leased to the City of Mineral Wells, Texas three months later for service on the city owned, 22-mile long, Mineral Wells & Eastern Railroad. This line was formerly the UP/MP/T&P‘s Weatherford, Mineral Wells & Northwestern subsidiary. The 701 was sold to the city on 7 February 1990, but the railroad closed in May 1992 and the locomotive was resold to the Acadiana Railway by mid-March 1993.

Although the EQUIPMENT REGISTER listed this car with a gross rail load (GRL) of 286,000 pounds (i.e. 100-ton trucks), the data on this car showed that it had a LD LMT of 242,600 pounds and a LT WT of 72,400 pounds for a GRL of 315,000 pounds, indicating that it was riding on 125-ton trucks. The car wore a bright yellow HOME ROAD FOR REPAIR-DO NOT LOAD sticker, but that didn’t bother the CN. After all, it was their car!
