Album Info:Here is a six-page article entitled "100 Years Ago: The Johnstown Flood And The Pennsylvania Railroad." It was published originally in the "National Railway Bulletin," Volume 54, Number 5, 1989, pages 12-17. No author is specified. "On June 1, 1889, Americans awoke to the news that the day before the City of Johnstown, Pa., had been devastated by the worst flood in the nation's history. Over 2,200 were dead, with many more homeless." (Page 13)

Photo Caption: "Clearly demonstrating the power of the flood which struck Johnstown on May 31, 1889, this Pennsylvania Consolidation has been stripped of its cab, boiler jacket, lagging, stack, and headlight ~ although the bell held fast!" The road number of this demolished steam locomotive is not recorded.

Description:  Here is page two of a six-page article entitled "100 Years Ago: The Johnstown Flood And The Pennsylvania Railroad." It was published originally in the "National Railway Bulletin," Volume 54, Number 5, 1989, page 13. Partial Caption: "R-class Consolidation No. 1309 appears to have fared well during the flood, with only a pile of debris heaped against its front end." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1309 is an H-3 (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in the Altoona Machine Shops during January of 1889 and retired in June of 1915 after 26 years of faithful service; it's barely five-months old when this disaster occurred.

Description:  Here is page three of a six-page article entitled "100 Years Ago: The Johnstown Flood And The Pennsylvania Railroad." It was published originally in the "National Railway Bulletin," Volume 54, Number 5, 1989, page 14. Partial Caption: "PRR's Conemaugh Viaduct near South Fork, Pa., dating from 1852, was destroyed in the Great Flood of May 1889." This double-tracked structure was completed in 1833 for $52,000 for use by the Allegheny Portage Railroad, but the PRR began using it only during 1854.
