Mr. James W. Young, 1955
Title:  Mr. James W. Young, 1955
Description:  PRR Men. The second person from the right in this photo is Mr. James W. Young. He lived in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, but was employed as a chemist by the Pennsylvania Railroad in their Altoona Test Department. In additon to being an avid model railroader (with two distinct layouts!), Mr. Young not only gave me a large number of railroad-related magazines, but also arranged for my Father and I to visit SLOPE Tower in Altoona during 1963. This photo was included in the "Altoona Area Railroad Pictorial History" edited by Linda White and published in 1996 by The Altoona Mirror, page 100.

After many years as a fireman and engineman on the Pennsylvania Railroad's Middle Division, he finished his career as a hostler at the East Altoona Roundhouse. He's shown here in August of 1960 with PRR engine #5820 that was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as a 3,000 horsepower BP-60 for passenger service in February of 1948, later regeared and downgraded to a 2,500 horsepower BP-50 for freight and helper service, and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service.

Mr. Mason B. Flagg, 1965
Title:  Mr. Mason B. Flagg, 1965
Description:  PRR Men. Here is a photo of the shoulder-sleeve insignia for the Pennsylvania Army National Guard's 28th Infantry Division. For me, it represents the influence of Mr. Mason B. Flagg. During 1965-1966, he served as a Junior Mechanical Engineer at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Samuel Rea Shop in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. I had an hour-long interview with him in the Fall of 1965. During the course of discussing career opportunities with the PRR, Mr. Flagg mentioned that the Railroad often selected people for Junior Engineer positions who had experience serving as military officers. (He was an Army lieutenant.) I promptly joined the Army Reserve Officer Training Program at the Altoona Campus of the Pennsylvania State University. Aiming for a commission provided a real sense of purpose for my college days, and the commission guided my life for the next 30 years in both active duty and reserve service. I never did work for the PRR, but that brief interview with Mr. Flagg changed my life!
