PRR 5819, BP-60, 1952
Title:  PRR 5819, BP-60, 1952
Description:  Lorenz. Here is a photo via Bob Lorenz that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1952. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8800, #5819, and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. #8800 is an ES-15M built by GM-EMD in January of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #5819 and its mate are both BP-60's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5819 was built in January of 1948 and retired in April of 1962. In this context, they're ascending the Allegheny Mountains and rounding the Curve with a mail and express train bound for Pittsburgh ~ but at Gallitzin, the "Geep" will uncouple and return to the Altoona Passenger Station for yet another helper run up "The Mountain."
