Description:  Here is a one-page editorial entitled "The Decline And Fall Of PRR Steam Power." It was published originally in the October 1949 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 4. No author is specified. Photo Caption: "Among the latest additions to the Pennsylvania's huge roster of diesels are 26 Baldwin freight units like No. 9584, shown at Enola, Pa. This is the first 1500-horsepower 'shark nose' type." Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9584 and #9524. #9584 is a BF-15 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in May of1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963. #9524 is an EF-15 built by GM-EMD in July of 1948, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in May of 1966.

Description:  Here is an image of a photo by Edward Kaspriske that was taken near Cove, Pennsylvania, in 1955. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9524 and three more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9524 was produced in July of 1948 and retired in May of 1966 after just 18 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-B-A set is rockin' 'n' rollin' with a mixed-cargo freight train out of Enola bound for Altoona and points West. Note the four-track Watering Point for steam-powered locomotives. Edward Kaspriske Collection.

Description:  Sweetland. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, in December of 1961. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5752 and #9524. #5752 is an AFP-20 built by the American Locomotive Company as an AP-20 in October of 1947, rated at 2,000 horsepower, later regeared and reclassified as an AFP-20, and retired in September of 1962. #9524 is an EF-15 built by GM-EMD in July of 1948, rated at 1,500 horsepower., and retired in May of 1966.
