Batesville Local |
Description: |
Batesville Local is headed to north yard to make up their train. This was probably the best job to be on. They would go to work at 10:00, take their train 45 miles north to Batesville and return home, sometimes working 2 or 3 small customers, but somedays going straight there and back, usually getting off at 2 or 3 PM. |

IC 9568 |
Description: |
A CN local crosses Washington St. as it prepares to service Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.), 388 Ahnaip St., via former C&NW rails on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 4 Jul. '19. It is difficult to imagine that then Washington Ave. was also Hwy. 41, until that highway was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities in the 1940s. Train had one locomotive, IC 9568, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling. The awesome, old building at left is currently home to Expert Driveline Truck & Auto Repair, 216 Washington St. Built in '35 for Verbrick's Service Co., Norbert F. Verbrick, proprietor; it operated as such until '84. Designed by Henry Auler in the Tudor Revival style, it and the adjacent building at 214 Washington St. (originally offices of Northwest Electrolyte and Engraving, also designed by Auler in the Tudor Revival style) were erected on what had long been a stave yard for the Menasha Wooden Ware Co. Wayne's Towing and Service occupied the near building for quite a while between the original and current occupants. Glass Nickel Pizza, 217 Washington St., can be seen at right. I'm not sure of the previous occupants of the building. There used to be a Clark station at that address. U.S. Paper Mills Corp., 69 Washington St., an active rail customer, is visible in the background. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. |

Description: |
A CN local approaches Milepost 1 and Garfield Ave. as it heads south via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 4 Jul. '19. The former Mondi Akrosil, LLC, facility, 206 Garfield Ave., is partially visible at right. Mondi moved the jobs to Pleasant Prairie, WI, circa '12. Originally Edgewater Paper Co., founded in 1917, which specialized in silicone coated release paper. It was purchased by Akrosil Corp., a holding company, in '69 but didn't change the name to Akrosil until Apr. '74. The Hammermill Paper Co. purchased Akrosil ca. '75, but apparently did not change the name. The facility operated as International Paper-Akrosil after International purchased Hammermill in '86. International sold some of its holdings, including this facility, to Kohlberg & Co., LLC, another holding company, in Jun. '05. Mondi Packaging, based in Vienna, Austria, purchased Akrosil in Jan. '06. There are remnants of a spur on the west side of the facility, but it has not received rail service for a long time. It appears to possibly be used for storage or warehousing. |

IC 9568, CN 4711, CN 4705 |
Description: |
A pair of CN locals face-off on the yard lead at the north end of the former SOO yard along Union St. at the former Adams St. grade crossing at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. '19. Near local was waiting to return to the yard from Menasha and had one locomotive, IC 9568. Far local, throwing a little smoke, was preparing to cross over to the passing siding and head toward Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, and had two locomotives, CN 4711 and CN 4705. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard (a few blocks to the south) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to piss off the "great" City of Neenah. |

CSX Spending the Night |
Description: |
A couple of CSX units were spending the night in Neenah. Seeing bigger power stored at Neenah doesnt happen too often, especially foreign power. |

CN 5735, CN 5666, IC 9568 |
Description: |
A CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd./N. Lake St. and passes the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 28 Jul. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel to the right. W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. becomes N. Lake St. underneath the Polish Connection. Modern maps tend to omit the W. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign, some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. |

Description: |
A CN local approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line (now relegated to a passing siding) at Neenah, WI on 28 Aug. '19. Local has just extracted several empty gondolas from Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 and is preparing to spot them on the nearby passing siding before spotting the loaded gondolas. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The former SOO rails run parallel on this side of the train. |

Description: |
A CN local approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) as it heads west via former SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 2 Sep. '19. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., stands in the background. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St., on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO railroad tracks. It’s the same facility, but the addressed changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69, but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc., purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. |
