UP 2-8-0 #449 - Union Pacific         
Long before a GP38 wore the number 449, this 2-8-0 Consolidation had the honor. Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) in December of 1900 as UP #1669, it was a Vauclain compound Consolidation. that was simplified sometime between 1903-10. The loco was renumbered to UP 449 in 1915. After nearly 54 years of service, the loco was "vacated" (retired and scrapped) in April of 1954. Rebuilt specs - 57" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21x30" cylinders, engine weight of 187,891 lb, tractive effort of 39,458 lb. No location or photographer was listed for this photo. The date was given only as July, 1949.
