DMIR 2-8-8-4 #234 - Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range         
Built by Baldwin in January of 1943 (serial #234), this massive and powerful locomotive was a decided advantage when moving long strings of loaded iron ore cars to Duluth and Twin Harbor ports. The 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotive lasted nearly 19 years in heavy service until retirement and scrapping in 1962. Specs - M4 class, 63" drivers, 240 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, engine weight of 699,700 lb, impressive tractive effort of 140,000 lb. There was no date, location or photographer listed for this photo so an approximate date and location were used.
