Thomas C. Ayers	General	Mr. Robert Hess writes that "Pennsylvania Railroad K4s #5409 was painted Tuscan red around 1929. It required more work to keep it clean, at a time when the Great Depression was getting worse and many P.R.R. employees (including engine cleaners) were being furloughed. Consequently, it was repainted in the standard 'Dark Green' color within a short period of time. Eliminating the rectangular stripe around 'Pennsylvania' on the tender was also an economy measure made after repainting. Striping on locomotives and tenders was completely omitted within a short time as well, but lasted for a while longer around the cab number."	1/12/2023 7:12:42 PM

Portraits 10. Here is a steam locomotive portrait of Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5409, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1927 and retired in February of 1955 after 28 years of faithful service. The simultaneous presence of both catenary and third-rail power delivery systems suggest that this photo was taken at Manhattan Transfer near Harrison, New Jersey. The photographer's name and the exact date are not recorded. Many thanks to Mr. Robert Hess for identifying both the locomotive and the location correctly. (#35 of 72)
