UP 4012
Big Boy 4012 rests in the yard at Laramie late in 1958. The 4000-series behemoth was built in 1941 by the American Locomotive Company, and would become the 13th of 25 Big Boys Union Pacific would come to own. The 4012 would be retired in 1959 with the rest of UPs Big Boy fleet. The engine would then be donated in 1962 to Steamtown, USA, a tourist operation in Bellows Falls, Vermont. The 4012 was originally to be accompanied by a 4-6-6-4 Challenger and office car as part of the donation, but only the 4012 would make it to Vermont. In 1984, the engine would be moved to its current home in Scranton, Pennsylvania at the Steamtown National Historic Site. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger)
