UP 4014
Big Boy 4014 thunders through Emory, Utah with a manifest freight. 4014 had been on the Union Pacific roster for around a year at the time of this 1942 image, taken by a UP company photographer. 4014 would pull its last regular-service freight train on July 21, 1959, arriving at Cheyenne at 1:50 AM with 88 loads and 9 empties. After its final run, the 4014 would be donated to the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona, California, and would be moved there in the following years. In the mid 2010s, UP looked to restore one of the 8 remaining Big Boys to excursion service, and so the 4014 was taken out of display, moved to Cheyenne, and refurbished, returning to steam in 2019, just in time for the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad.
