Rolling out of Town
UP 4014 thunders past a switch as it departs the yard in Laramie in late 1956. 4014 is nearing the end of its service life, its first one, that is. In 2013, UP purchased the massive locomotive from the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, California. Over the next 6 years, workers brought 4014 back to life in UPs Cheyenne backshops. 4014 returned to service in May of 2019 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad. After a tour of UP rails that year, 4014 returned to Cheyenne, just as the COVID-19 pandemic struck America. 4014 stayed in Cheyenne during the pandemic, but a new trip was planned for 2022.
