| Lorenz. Here is a photo via Bob Lorenz that was taken at the State Route 53 Highway Bridge near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in 1951. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5818 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BP-60's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5818 was constructed in January of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context they've just passed under the Bridge with the eastbound "Gotham Limited" and will soon enter the New Portage Tunnel on their way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and Harrisburg. Note that the first car in the train is the Pennsy-Pullman car named "North Vineland." (Gift from Brad Mann.) |
