PRR 9684, EH-15, 1949
FM. Here is a duplicate 35mm B&W slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Altoona, Pennsylvania. Photo Caption: "A mile below the Horseshoe Curve with a 3-unit diesel on front and a 3-unit diesel pusher. Summer, 1949." Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9684 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are EH-15's built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9684 was constructed as an EH-15 in February of 1949, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and retired in December of 1966 after just 17 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-A set is serving as tail-end pushers on a westbound freight train ~ but once through one of the Gallitzin tunnels, they'll be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." This photo comes from a slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (22-52).
