Big Boy 4022
Big Boy 4022 takes a ride on the turntable in Cheyenne. The Big Boys extreme size made servicing them a complicated endeavor. In anticipation of the arrival of the first Big Boys in 1941, UP undertook a plan to improve their right-of-way from Cheyenne to Green River. Water towers were raised to accommodate the 47 foot tenders, and turntables like in Cheyenne were improved or replaced. The turntable in Cheyenne was 126 feet long. The Big Boys measured 135 feet, so, if aligned perfectly, the pilot and rear of the tender would overhang 4 and a half feet. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger)
