DH GP39-2 #7419 - Delaware & Hudson
Still showing its heritage in the form of a faint Reading diamond under the cab window is this ex-RDG #3419 built in December of 1974 but now on the Delaware & Hudson roster as #7419. Strangely, an unknown photographer caught this DH unit rolling along on the Norfolk & Western mainline near Fort Wayne, Indiana, a long, long distance from home.

Tom Beckett General At the time, D&H and N&W ran a lot of power through at Buffalo. It was not uncommon to see D&H trains with mostly NW power, most of the time various geeps, but also SD 45's. I don't know if the NW power ran all the way to Montreal, but it surely made it to Mechanicville, as it was common north of Binghamton. So seeing D&H power in Indiana was not unusual, though if I had to guess, I'd bet most of the time it got turned back at Bellevue Oh. The D&H had two sets of GP 39-2's. These ex Reading units, which had been in the 3400 series on the RDG, became D&H 7401-7420; the other group was the 7600 series units that D&H acquired new from EMD in 1976, their first non Alco power. The 7600's were renumbered into the 350 series by Guilford, and lettered for Boston & Maine. When Guilford jettisoned the D&H in 1988, they kept the units, along with the dozen U 23B's that had been transferred to the Maine Central. 5/1/2021 3:57:03 AM
