DH 4-6-6-4 #1505 - Delaware & Hudson         
Long, massive, powerful and sleek all in one would be the description of this Delaware & Hudson 4-6-6-4 Challenger built by Alco-Schenectady in June of 1940. Specs - serial #69302, class J-95, 69" drivers, impressive boiler pressure of 285 psi, four 20.5x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 597,000 lg, and impressive tractive effort of 94,000 lb. All of the D&H Challengers were scrapped between 1952-52 with only #1508 tender having survived. Although listed as Mechnicsville,NJ, as tom Beckett points out (see comment below), this is actually Mechanicville, NY. thanks Tom for helping with this. Max Miller photo

Tom Beckett General This is actually Mechanicville NY-note spelling and correct state-about 20 minutes north of Albany, where the D&H had a large yard alongside a large B&M yard. There's almost nothing left of the either yard, though NS now has an intermodal ramp there. 2/5/2021 5:10:58 AM
