CN 2-8-2 #3254 - Canadian National
Built by the Canadian Locomotive Company in 1917 originally as CN 2854, this loco has had an interesting life. The loco was retired and sold in November of 1961 to Willis F. Barron who eventually sold it to the Gettysburg Railroad. In the summer of 1987, the steam locomotive arrived at Steamtown National Historic Site after they traded Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 #1278 and some extra cash for the 3254. Until 1995, the 3254 was masqueraded as Lackawanna No. 1271. As a result of issues with either the boiler/firebox or the frame, combined with other needed maintenance which made further operation impractical, No. 3254 was taken out of service indefinitely after the 2012 season. It is now a static display and as recently as 2020 in front of the Steamtown National Historic Site. Specs - serial #1463, class S-1c, 63" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 276,000 lb, tractive effort of 53,113 lb. Paul Kuehner photo

Tom Beckett General That's a rather ignominious end for an engine that served well, handling a good many trips for Steamtown in the early 90's. If it's on display at Steamtown, it's in Scranton, and not Ashland, whichis some distance away down in anthracite country, not too far from the infamous fire at Centralia PA 1/24/2021 4:16:08 AM
