PRR 6440, J-1, 1953
BYC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just East of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 August 1953. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6440, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during October of 1943 and retired in February of 1960 after just 17 years of revenue service. In this context, it's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West.
