RPCX 800610 "Osage River"
A rare site occurred on this day: Amtrak train No. 58, the Northbound City of New Orleans, detours out of New Orleans over the Norfolk Southern. This train normally operates over the Illinois Central between New Orleans and Chicago; however, due to an Illinois Central derailment at Prescott Road in Jackson, MS this train will operate over the NS to Hattiesburg, MS and then into Jackson, MS on the IC Beaumont District. Here we see the train accelerating on the NS New Orleans Terminal as it approaches the Marconi Drive overpass and City Park. P40-8 822, P32-8 509, 1254, 39906, 31043, 34084, 399?4, 34057, 34061, 33008, 38043, 32056, 32047, 32033, and PV "Osage River" (800610). The consist was a bit longer than normal to handle increased ridership for Mardi Gras. While on the NS this train operated as NS symbol O-22. Southbound train No. 59 also detoured via this route on this day as NS symbol O-23.
