Tom Beckett General Nice stuff!! Like all NYC power, the Mohawks were attractive engines that performed well. You are correct on your assessment of the name "Mohawk" in that calling it a "mountain" didn't really fit on the NYC, a road known for, and which advertized, its lack of heavy grades. One also has to consider the 100 miles or so of running along the namesake river from the Albany area to Utica, as well as the tribe native to upstate NY, though I doubt that was a consideration. Nice to see one in Corning, not a well known NYC location. That line went through the Grand Canyon of PA south of Wellsboro PA, to a connection with the PRR at Jersey Shore, a line that would last into Conrail. The Corning operation is a story in itself, having originally been street running with the Erie, and later relocated around downtown. 5/24/2014 4:24:11 PM
James Rader General Good chance my grandfather ran this engine and possible my father fired her. Both were fireman and then engineers out of Corning. Have a picture of 2777 at the Corning coaling tower. Waiting for moderators to approve me so I can post dozens of photos from this division from the 1930's. 10/11/2017 3:17:53 PM
