VGN EL3a #107  Contributor's Pick!
Built by Alco & Westinghouse starting in 1925, these single, double & triple EL-3a electric units were specially built to handle the major grades found on the Virginian Rwy. The unique two wheel linkage like a steam engine main drive makes it a transitional unit between steam and electric. Unique, powerful, and in a brutish, boxy way, beautiful. Photo by R. D. Patton.
