Colorado & Eastern 986 is ex-BN 986, nee-GN 186, one of only 13 NW5s built (while EMD was still trying to figure out how to make a road switcher)

David Farmer General Caption is only partially correct - the NW5 was not an EMD attempt to build a road switcher. The NW% was a steam generator equipped switcher for setting up passenger trains. (note both fuel and water tanks). After passenger service died they probably made a good branch line engine. The end result also sparked a couple other EMD models. 9/18/2014 8:05:28 PM
Mike Woodruff General Sorry, but we'll have to agree to disagree on this, Dave. The NW5 is listed on page EMD-38 in Jerry Pinkepank's "Diesel Spotters Guide" as a light road switcher. While the NW5s built for Fort Street Union Depot and Southern were used in the manner you describe, the GN NW5s were not, and in fact were GN diesel class RS-2. 9/18/2014 8:52:20 PM
David Farmer General Mike, am glad to seee you fill in the details on the NW5. My previous comments were based mainly on past things I've read somewhere(?). I found out a long time ago railroaders don't always see things the way books, magazines & railfans do. Thanks again. 9/19/2014 3:21:07 PM
