SP RSD5 5298
SP RSD5 5298, Ogden, Utah, October 3, 1958, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. The SP was the largest owner of the RSD5, with the SP proper owning 36 units, and subsidiary T&NO owning 24. Some units, including this one, were traded back to Alco in 1960 on an order of RSD12's, with some of the trade-in components reused on the RSD12 order, notably the trucks. Locomotive #'s 5294-5307 and #'s 5336-5339 were set up long hood forward (front), and #'s 5445-5507 (later #'s 2871-2885) were set up with the short hood as front. On the SP, units set up with the long hood as front indicated their intended service as switchers/branch line locomotives, and those set up with the short hood as front indicated their intended service was as road helpers. This particular RSD5 was built in 1953, SP class DF-115.
