CO 4-6-4 #491 |
Description: |
Fine example of the craftsmanship of the C&O shops in 1947. The loco was originally built by Alco-Richmond in 1926 as a 4-6-2 but rebuilt by the C&O shops in 1947 as a streamlined 4-6-4 Hudson with a new classification of L-1. IMHO, one of the finest streamlined steam locos ever built. The photo is from the C.W. Jernstrom collection. |

Another excellent example of the 1947 C&O shops rebuilt streamlined 4-6-4 Hudson from a 1926 Alco-Richmond built 4-6-2 Pacific and reclassified as an L-1 class member. Wish this were in color to see the rich yellow and stainless steel cowling! The date is approximate. The photo is from the C.W. Jernstrom collection. |

C&O 4-6-4 #494 - Chesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
Starting life as a 1926 Alco-Richmond built 4-6-2 "Pacific", this loco went through an upgrade at the C&O Huntington shops along with its 3 other sisters. They were converted to 4-6-4 "Hudsons". All but #494 here were covered with streamlined coweling and painted yellow & silver. Only one remains at the B&O Museum in Baltimore. Eventually this one was retired and scrapped by mid 1950's. Beautiful photo of a 1930 Alco-Schenectady Hudson. According to one source "These engines, built for the New York Central subsidiary, were virtually identical to the NYC J-series Hudsons. A visible difference was the B&A square sand dome." Specifics - 75" drivers, respectable 240 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine weight of 353,000 lb, tractive effort of 47,600 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo. |

DLW 4-6-4 #1151 - Delaware, Lackawanna & Western |
Description: |
Here is a powerful and fast 4-6-4 Hudson built by Alco-Schenectady in 1937 for the DLW. One online source states "...fast, powerful engines designed to pull 16-18 cars at 80 mph -- but the speed limit on the route was 70 mph and the trains were rarely ever more than 8 to 10 cars." Interesting oddity - does anyone know why there are blocks of rock on the pilot? Did this loco go so fast it had to be held down in front - just kidding. Specs - serial #68910, class M-1, 80" drivers, 245 psi boiler pressure, 26x30" cylinders, engine weight of 377,000 lb, tractive effort of 52,791 lb. All five in the M-1 class were removed from service and scrapped between 1951-53. J.R. Quinn photo |
