All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #4204 was built as number "5880" in April of 1949 and renumbered "4204" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. Snapping the First Class
Description:
No.25 - The Duquesne - with a pair of U25C helpers and three E units with 22 cars and healthy head-end traffic is coming out of Scotch Run Curve at MP 241 on this first day of September, 1966 at a time when renumbering of locomotives had begun for the pending Penn-Central merger. PRR helpers on the point were referred to as "snappers". Note the lead E unit still has its trainphone antennas.

Two EMD E units are heading up this passenger train. PRR 4208 was first delivered as one of the 5800 numbered units, it was renumbered after PRR 2-10-0 #4208 was retired. Note the lack of a Pennsy stripe on the lead unit but a solid one on the trailing unit. Date and location unknown.

Both are EP-20's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #4222 was built as number "5862" in February of 1948, renumbered "4222" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger, and retired in September of 1967 after just 19 years of revenue service. Zak. Here is an original 35mm color slide by Martin S. Zak that was taken while riding in a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train around the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in September of 1966. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #4224 and two more E-7's whose numbers are not recorded. #4224 is an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in 1948 and rated at 2,000 HP; its original PRR number was "5864." The train is traversing the Curve on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Also visible on the right is PRR engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Curve in June of 1957, and restored for excursion service in April of 1987.

They have just emerged from the New Portage Tunnel with an eastbound passenger train, and are on the way down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Altoona, Harrisburg, and points East. The bridge the train is crossing passes over the westbound New Portage Branch just before it merges with the main line.

Here is a postal card entitled "Next Stop, Merger City." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Pennsylvania RR EMD E7 #4244 and E8 #4295 whisk a passenger train near Chicago in August, 1966. Recently re-painted tuscan red, both units wear Penn-Central style numbers on sides, anticipating the approaching PC merger." The photographer is not identified. Both engines were built by GM-EMD. #4244 is an EP-20 constructed in August of 1947 as number "5844" and rated at 2,000 horsepower, while #4295 is an EP-22 built in March of 1951 as number "5895" and rated at 2,250 horsepower.

The photographer is not identified. Partial Caption: "On February 19, 1949, mail train No. 11 rear-ended standing M1a-class steam engine No. 6737 and a cabin car near Burgettstown, Pa., on the Pittsburgh-St. Louis main line." 12th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5842, a unit whose number is not recorded, and #5760. All were built by EMD. #5842 is an EP-20 built in 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. #5760 is an EP-22 built in 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. Along with their westbound passenger train, they have stopped in front of the Altoona Station. During this stop, not only will passengers get off or board the train, but both engine and train crews will change as well. Visible in the distance is the 17th Street Bridge, as well as three other PRR locomotives; the one in the middle is engine #6513, which will serve as this train's helper up the Allegheny Mountains.

Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #6513 and #5842. #6513 is a GF-25A built by General Electric in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #5842 is an EP-20 built in 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. In this photo, #6513 is in the process of coupling with #5842 to help pull the passenger train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin ~ whereupon #6513 will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up the Mountains. Note the railroader on the other side of the tracks, who will couple all of the necessary hoses.
