Mississippi Central 2-8-2 124 |
Description: |
Mississippi Central 2-8-2 124 was at Hattiesburg near the end of its career on the MSC. The Mikado had been built by Alco’s Brooks Works (63168) in December 1923 as J.J. Newman Lumber Co. 20 and was purchased by the railroad in December 1935. The MSC had purchased four identical locomotives, the 120-123, in July and November 1923, so it fit right in. The 124 was sold to the Green Brothers Gravel Co. in June 1953 for use at Franklinton, Louisiana and it was scrapped in September 1965. |

Mississippi Central 2-8-2 131 |
Description: |
Mississippi Central 131 was photographed at Hattiesburg a year before all of the railroad’s steam engines were replaced by new EMD SW9’s 201-210. The locomotive was one of two MSC Mikados (130 and 131) that had been built by Alco’s Brooks Works (65352) in December 1923. The 131 was one of seven MSC locos that were sold to the Southwest Steel Co. of Memphis in June 1953, but it derailed on its way to Memphis and was scrapped at Hattiesburg. |
