A massive Great Northern 2-8-8-0 steam engine stored at Superior WI in June 1958.
Title:  A massive Great Northern 2-8-8-0 steam engine stored at Superior WI in June 1958.
Description:  This was at the end of steam where steam engines were stored in case of need during the fall grain rush across the GN system. The GN had a large yard in Superior WI that remains a large switching yard on the BNSF. 4 BNSF SD9's that once locked couplers with steam engines still remain on the BNSF in 2012. Search for BNSF 1553 on the archive. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2749873. This steam engine was based out of Allouez roundhouse.

Title:  Great Northern steam engine 2-8-8-0 at Mpls Jct MN in 1947
Description:  Normally assigned to the GN iron range division the large articulated engines came through Mpls Jct MN at times and also massive 2-8-8-2s from the Rocky Mt division as well. Note the GN coaling towers at Mpls Jct MN. Horsepower around 6,300 and could haul 200 loaded ore car trains at 14,000 tons without aid. This N3 class articulated ran between Allouez and Hibbing ore mines. Steam lasted thru the fall of 1957 on the GN. Mpls Jct has a wye to turn these large engines, and the wye remains on the BNSF today.

Great Northern 2-8-8-0 steam engine in the storage lines early in the 1960s.
Title:  Great Northern 2-8-8-0 steam engine in the storage lines early in the 1960s.
Description:  The GN stored many steam engines around the system thru the 1960s. This is at Superior WI GN yard near Duluth. The GN used these for hauling iron ore as an N3 class on the MN iron range. The boiler operated at 240 psi. Horsepower is estimated at over 6,400 HP. This engine weighed over 280 tons and 110 feet long. A modern diesel engine on average is 4,400 HP in the year 2011. Some N3 class steam engines were still running in 1954. This operated out of the Allouez GN roundhouse.
