Description:  This is a massive Mountain-type locomotive built by Baldwin in 1935 for the Boston & Maine RR. For this class of locomotives, B&M sponsored a naming contest for each of the 18 locos built. The winning name for this one was "Oliver Wendell Holmes". Eventually this unit was sold to the B&O in 1947. Speicifics - 73" drivers, 240 psi boiler pressure, 28"x31" cylinders, engine weight of 416,100 lb, tractive effort of 67,918 lb. No location or photographer were listed and the date is an approximation.

Description:  Built by Baldwin in March of 1935, this Boston & Maine 4-8-2 Mountain type steam locomotive was given the name "Oliver Wendell Holmes" in the naming contest held when it was delivered to the B&M. The loco served until dieselization forced its sale to the B&O in 7/28/1947. The loco became BO 5650 and renumbered in 1956 to BO 750. It was dropped from the B&O roster in 1957. Specs - serial #61825, class R-1a, 73" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 18x31" cylinders, engine weight of 416,100 lb, tractive effort of 67,900 lb. Title:  BM 4-8-2 #4106 - Boston & Maine RR
Description:  Named "Little John" in the B&M sponsored contest, this brute is similar to its namesake, a real powerhouse in disguise. Built by Baldwin in 1937 along with 17 others, the R-1 class served the B&M well through the war years. In 1947, this unit and several of its sisters were sold to the B&O and renumbered 5606. No location or photographer were listed for this photo and the date is an approximation.

Description:  Long and powerful, this Baldwin 4-8-2 Mountain type steam locomotive was built in June of 1941 and was the heaviest Mountain type built in the US. "Black Arrow" was the winning entry in the naming contest that B&M staged when it was delievered. The loco served the B&M until dieselization ended its career. It was scrapped in September of 1956.
