In todays world of sterile rights of way-pole lines gone, new signals, etc, the Tier was a throwback. As a backwater of a large system, it did not get the attention of the ex Pennsy, or the NYC, and for most of Conrail's existence, except for the power and rolling stock, looked almost exactly like the EL. One such scene is near MP 320 in Adrian, where we see OIEL rolling along the poles-the wires were still active-and theres even a semaphore in the distance. |

OIEL was a hard train to get. Sometimes it ran before dawn in the Tier, so photo ops were limited. Another inhibiting factor was that it would often yard at Gang Mills, and a crew would not be called until much later in the day. I was fortunate on this cold(10 degrees) Saturday morning to catch it just as the light got good, and chase to Gang Mills. Here it is passing the semaphore at MP 259. |

There were these "traffic light" types, targets, and semaphores. The GP40-2 was to Conrail what the Pontiac Trans Am was to high school - insular, fast, and snazzy. CR 3281 was a part of CR's first GP0-2 order which were delivered in Spring of 1977. The TV16 dated back to New York Central days and was a combined trailervan, autoracks train. TV16 would come in with the loaded autoracks behind the last vans. TV16 went in at CP-5 for running 1 or 3 Bellman's Creek and the cut was made behind the last North Bergen right on running 1 or 3. A local would bring the rear end crew up to Bellman's Creek to make the cut. |

Off the Corning Secondary |

The Southern Tier picnic train comes off the Corning Secondary onto the Southern Tier, rolling behind the yard office and shop off the 1951 connection to the Erie. This was part of the line relocation that took the tracks out of downtown Corning, where they ran in the street. The NYC line ran on the Erie to what is now CP Corning, under the NY 414 overpass, where the ex NYC line splits to head north along Seneca Lake, connecting with what is now the CSX Chicago Line at Lyons. The GP 40 will pull the train through CP W Glass onto the Corning Secondary, clear the signal at North Glass, and cut off. It will go back to Gang Mills, the passenger train, now with the Es in the lead, will head east on the Tier. |
