BYC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just East of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5813 and another "Centipede" whose number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5813 was built in May of 1947 and retired in September of 1962. Given the presence of the N-8 caboose, they are pushing a freight train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin where they will uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another run up "The Mountain." |

Celebration. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide (converted to B&W) of (L to R) Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5813 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5813 was constructed in May of 1947 and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. The photographer's name, the exact date, and the location are not recorded. |

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5823 and #5813. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, rated at 2,500 HP each, and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of service. In this context, they're passing under the Riggle's Gap Bridge with a mixed-cargo freight train on its way from Altoona to Enola. Slide produced and distributed by the Lake Shore Railway Historical Society. |
