Album Info:Here is a four-page article by Mr. Frederick Westing entitled "Birth Of The Broadway." It was published originally in the March 1952 issue of "Trains & Travel" magazine, pages 52-55. "New York to Chicago in 20 hours? 'Surely it is an experiment,' said an astonished writer. But the 'Pennsylvania Special' went through on time." (Page 52) Includes a detailed account of the maiden run of the westbound "Pennsylvania Special" on Sunday, 15 June 1902.

Photo by Gottfried Heibesen. PRR engine #374 is an E-3A (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in Juniata during 1905 and retired in March of 1932 after 27 years of revenue service.

Description:  Here is page two of a four-page article by Frederick Westing entitled "Birth Of The Broadway." It was published originally in the March 1952 issue of "Trains & Travel" magazine, page 53. Revised Photo Caption: "On her maiden run west [on Sunday, 15 June 1902], No. 29 ~ the 'Pennsylvania Special' ~ gathers speed through the Bergen Cut outside Jersey City with two sleepers, a diner, and a lounge-baggage car. On this memorable trip, Engineer 'Jimmy" Lee gripped the throttle of No. 1395, the high-mounted American Standard." Photo by F.W. Blauvelt. PRR engine #1395 is a D-16A (4-4-0) "American" built in Juniata during May of 1898, rebuilt as a D-16 in October of 1911, and retired in March of 1923 after 25 years of faithful service.

Partial Caption: "In this rare photo of 1910 taken near the Zoo interlocker, the 'Pennsylvania Special' is being hauled by J-28 class No. 2761, a big Prairie type demonstrator built for the road by Alco." Photo by Gottfried Heibesen. PRR engine #2761 is a J-28 (2-6-2) "Prairie" built by the American Locomotive Company during 1905, renumbered 02761 in 1918, and retired in November of 1921 after just 16 years of experimental service.
