CN 2314
Title:  CN 2314
Description:  A dreary, old morning to start the longest day of the year and DAy 2 of the Galesburg Trip. We got up fairly early and ate breakfast at the hotel before heading out to the IC mainline to New Orleans to catch a couple CN trains. We got into Bradley, IL, a suburb of Kankakee and to our surpise when we crossed the tracks there was a slow moving manifest heading south. The reason it was moving so slow was due to a 10 MPH speed restriction just behind us. Of course, raindrops had to alter this shot bu there isnt much you can do when it is raining as hard as it was there!

CN 2984
Title:  CN 2984
Description:  A northbound intermodel then snuck up behind us. Leaving the 10 MPH speed restriction it was moving much faster. Of course, the rain picked up as it approached.

Title:  CN 2984
Description:  A closer shot of the intermodel. It had mid-train DPU but it was raining so hard that neither of us bothered to get photos of it. Just another GEVO anyway.

AMTK 4632
Title:  AMTK 4632
Description:  Rainy, dark, and too fast for this one. AMTK 391, the southbound Saluki rips by us at 70MPH outside of Manteno, IL. Shutter speed slowed down way too much for this shot.

CN 2931
Title:  CN 2931
Description:  Next we went into Manteno and thankfully then the rain decided to let up a little bit. Wasnt long before CN M342 came south by robably one of the most photographed grain elevators in the United States. Does make for a great prop! This was my first time shooting something beside it, but dad has shot many a train beside it.

CN 2145
Title:  CN 2145
Description:  We went into the antique mall that is beside the tracks after the last train passed. We knew that there was another southbound coming soon, but we had enough time to look around. I bought another Hot Wheel car to add to my collection. By this point the rain started up a little bit again, but to our advantage we were able to stand underneath the awning of the antique mall to shoot this one. Soon, CN A497 came south with a CN leader and a CP unit in train by the grain elevator.

IC 9623
Title:  IC 9623
Description:  We went back into Kankakee to check out the yard. We started getting into heavy traffic when we heard the defect detector just outside of the yard go off. We got to the yard just in time to see the CN yard local coming back into the yard with a repainted IC leader and a GT painted GP9R

BNSF 5133
Title:  BNSF 5133
Description:  Next we went over to NSs yard outside of town. When we got there, there was an eastbound train due to go out (would become NS 10R later) with a Fakebonnet between two orange GEs. The two through trains that run on this line (NS 31K, NS 10R) both come and go from BNSF so it isnt unusual at all to see BNSF power on either of these trains.

PRLX 1220
Title:  PRLX 1220
Description:  Next we went out to the Kankakee Belt Railway just outside of town. (Dont know the real name of the operation but this is what we call it) This small short line serves a couple industries outside of town that are not along the CN or NS mainlines. The sole operating power for the railroad is this ex-CSX SW1200, now a Progress Rail lease unit. They werent operating today sadly, but still a neat operation to look at!

AMTK 38
Title:  AMTK 38
Description:  After leaving Kankakee behind we started our jont to the Transcon. When we got to Braidwood though we noticed that the signal there was yellow for a northbound. Since mostly Amtrak trains run this line we took a look at the status map to see if any were near. It didnt show any nearby, but the signals there are absolutes so we knew that there had to be a train coming. Sure enough, almost right after it turned green a headlight popped up out of the dip and AMTK 22, the northbound Texas Eagle, came rushing by us.

Title:  BNSF MOW
Description:  The Transcon went usually dead after the last train so we moved onto Mazon. There was a train lined but it was a long ways away. Thankfully a MOW caravan was parked on a siding near the grain elevator we were sitting at so it gave us something interesting to take photos of while we waited.

BNSF 5326
Title:  BNSF 5326
Description:  All along the ATSF were old gas houses that were once used by Sonoco to pump gas through the area. Many of the buildings are still left standing after many years of being abandoned and they make for excellent props for trains coming by. We went over to Kernan, IL where one still stands. We were lined for a westbound train to come. Over an hour and twenty minutes pass and it finally comes. No eastbounds during that time either. Thats pretty unusual for a line as busy as the Transcon. And of course right before it came it began to rain fairly steadily again, so I didnt get the shot I wanted exactly but it was going to have to work. A westbound Z train rips by us with a pair of NS units in trail.

BNSF 1080
Title:  BNSF 1080
Description:  The rain started to cut loose as we moved into Streator. NS 31K was there with a fresh BNSF crew waiting for permission to continue west on the Transcon. Dispatch told them they had to wait on the intermodel that we caught at Kernan. By the time we got into Streator though they were already starting to curve off, and it had a H1 leader! The same power we saw sitting back in the NS yard at Kankakee! Well we definitely werent going to let that go that easily and we were just able to get out ahead of it enough outisde of Reading, IL. Despite it being a crappy photo, chances are we wont see another H1 leading a train, so this is quite a catch!

Title:  BNSF 7224
Description:  Next we drove down a road that looks more like a cattle path. With the rain it was extremely muddy and wet but we managed to get through. Was interesting to see all the water and mud fly up driving down the road at nealy 50 MPH. Sadly though right before we were getting ready to turn this eastbound spine car train pinned us just outside of Ancona.

BNSF 6089
Title:  BNSF 6089
Description:  When the eastbound passed we started to hear the rumble and horn of a westbound train rushing our way. BNSF 6089 leads a westbound intermodel out of Wenona. This would be the final train of the evening. A total of 23 today, so we caught less than 20 on the Transcon which is very unusual for such a busy railroad. The longest day of the year ended up being more like the shortest day of summer do to all the rain. If it wouldnt have been for all the cloud cover that evening we might have been able to stay out longer but it just got too dark. That brings the total number of trains to 67 for the trip. Tomorrow we head out to Galesburg following the Transcon from Wenona to there. Hopefully there are more trains tomorrow!
