Album Info:Here is a six-page camera study celebrating the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Centipede" diesel-electric locomotives. It was published originally in the May-June 1973 issue of "PC Railroader" magazine, pages 23-28. No author is specified, but photo credits are specified in the captions. All of the PRR's "Centipedes" were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. Originally intended for passenger service, one semi-permanently coupled pair of these engines was rated at 6,000 horsepower ~ but due to numerous mechanical and operational problems, they were eventually downgraded to 5,000 horsepower per pair and relegated to freight/helper/pusher service only. Also included are several photos related to the PRR's "Centipedes."

Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5824 was constructed in April of 1947 and retired in April of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. They're serving as tail-end pushers for a mixed-cargo freight train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the "Centipedes" will be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." The photographer's name and the date are not recorded.

Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5832, a BH-50 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as a 3,000 horsepower BP-60A in February of 1948, later regeared and reclassified as a 2,500 horsepower BH-50, and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of service. It's just a week or so away from being scrapped.
