Here are 14 original photos that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property and trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. All of them concern a relatively-minor derailment that occurred right in the middle of the interlocking at 14th Street, just about midway between the 12th and 17th Street Bridges.

Derailment. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here is PRR engine #8663, an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. It is coupled to the "western" work train and steam-powered crane that are rerailing the derailed cars and locomotives of the eastbound freight train on the next track over. Derailment. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here on the right (L to R) are PRR engines #9691 and #7206. Both were built by EMD. #9691 is an EH-15 built in 1949 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #7206 is an EFS-17M built in 1957 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. They have just come down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve with a 60-car mixed-cargo freight train and are passing the derailment site with caution. The caboose is #477382. Visible in the center is PRR steam-powered crane #490965. Visible on the left is one of the two derailed locomotives, PRR engine #8890 ~ an AS-10 built by the American Locomotive Company in 1950 and rated at 1,000 horsepower. Visible in the distance (L to R) are the PRR Test Plant Building and the 17th Street Bridge.

PRR 5631, AS-10AM, 1965
Description:
Derailment. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here (L to R) are the two derailed locomotives, PRR engines #5631 and #8890. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company in 1950 and rated at 1,000 horsepower each. #5631 is an AS-10AM while #8890 is an AS-10. They had just come down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve with a mixed-cargo freight train when they split a switch in the 14th Street Interlocking. Because the train was going fairly slow at the time of the derailment, no one was injured seriously.

At this point in the clean-up process, they remain coupled to a single box car: CGW 9166. Visible in the background are two of the original PRR 12th Street Car Shop buildings. Derailment. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #7057, #7197-B, #7042, and #2261. All were built by EMD. #7057, #7197-B and #7042 are EFS-17M's and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7057 was built in 1956, #7197-B was built in 1957, while #7042 was built in 1955. #2261 is an EF-25 built in 1964 and rated at 2,500 horsepower.
