ATSF 0-6-0 #2040 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Title:  ATSF 0-6-0 #2040 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:  Posing out in a wide open prairie is the cute little plugger, Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe 0-6-0 yard swticher #2040 (serial #37041). The loco was built by Baldwin in October of 1911 and served for over 40 years. This 0-6-0 class switcher was renumbered in 1946 to ATSF #9039. The class was gone from the roster by 1954 with this loco being sold for scrap to the Purdy Company on 6/3/1950. Specs - serial #37041, class 2039, 51" drivers, 20x26" cylinders engine weight of 155,972 lb, tractive effort of 31,300 lb. No location, date or photographer was listed for this clean photo. Since it still wore its original number, the date has to be before 1945 and the flatness in the background makes Kansas a possible location.

ATSF 2-10-4 #5012 = Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Title:  ATSF 2-10-4 #5012 = Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:  Beautiful b&w photo of the powerful wheels on the ATSF 2-10-4 Texas type steam locomotive #5012. It has a look of an O. Winston Link style to it. The photo is probably one of the publicity shots taken by Baldwin after it rolled off the assembly line. This class of 2-10-4 steam locomotives were often described as the "superpower" ideal as mentioned in Baldwin's own in-house publications. Sadly, this loco lasted only 14 years in revenue service before being sold for scrap on 5/23/1959 to George T. Cook Company. Specs - serial #70818, class 5011, 74" drivers, impressive 310 oil burner, psi boiler pressure, 30x34" cylinders, engine weight of 536,000 lb, impressive tractive effort of 108,961 lb.

ATSF 4-8-2 #2929 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Title:  ATSF 4-8-2 #2929 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:  Built by Baldwin during WWII (1944), this Northern type locomotive may be the heaviest passenger locomotive ever built since heavier steel had to be used instead of some of the less dense alloys in short supply. This Northern type locomotive had tall 80" drivers and produced a whopping 300 psi boiler pressure. The class was retired in 1959 after a short 15 years service. A J. W. Hulsman photo.

ATSF 4-8-4 #3753 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Title:  ATSF 4-8-4 #3753 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:  With a need for more powerful locomotives to handle the ever increasing passenger and freight train lengths, the Santa Fe turned to the Northern 4-8-4 configuration, named after the 1st railroad - Northern Pacific - to receive them. This 1927 Baldwin built locomotive running in the wide open expanses in this photo was an ATSF class 3751 with tall 73" drivers. It developed a boiler pressure of 210 psi and generated an impressive 66,021 lb tractive effort. Rebuilt in 1938, it would have almost all of the modern improvements making it one of the best. The class was retired in 1956-57. The date is approximate

Description:  Stopped outside this small depot in the open western country, ATSF #3774 was a 1938 Baldwin built 4-8-4 "Northern" type locomotive with very high stepping 80" drivers for speed, a whopping 300 psi boiler pressure and generated a massive 79,968 lb tractive effort, making it ideal for the ATSF long hauls through the western states. During one of its overhauls, this loco was switched to burning oil, a distinct advantage out west. The class was finally retired in 1959. The date of this photo is approximate.
