NP 4-6-0 #1354 - Northern Pacific
Title:  NP 4-6-0 #1354 - Northern Pacific
Description:  Good looking 1902-02 Burnham, Wm & Co class S-4 compound Ten Wheeler-type with 63" drivers and generated a boiler pressure of 200 psi for its 15.5"x30" cylinders. Tractive effort was a modest 28,698 lb. In 1918, Baldwin simplified the class, increased the cylinder size to 21"x30" and boosted the tractive effort to 35,700 lb. Confusing note on back by photographer Walter W. Adams states - "Built Baldwin 1902. 40 built, all in service". Not sure that was possible with the date he listed for the photo. Thanks to Eric Carlson (see comment below), the class of locos was simplified in the 1920's and four still survive today with one possibly being restored to operation.

NP 4-6-0 #249 - Northern Pacific
Title:  NP 4-6-0 #249 - Northern Pacific
Description:  This is a sharp looking 1900 Alco-built ten wheeler, NP class p-2 compound, with 69" drivers. It could generate a boiler pressure of 200 psi for its compound 22"x26" cylinders. Engine weight was 160,400 lb and it could produce a tractive effort of 21,854 lb. In 1920 Schenectady rebuilt it - simplified cylinder configuration - dropping the engine weight to 158,000 lb and increasing the tractive effort to 25,623 lb. Date and location are approximations and no photographer was listed for this photo unfortunately.
