BUAL meets 261 |
Description: |
BUAL approaches the switch to the Lehigh Line, which will take it to the former Lehigh Valley and Allentown, CP 261 passes westbound. Conrail switched the western end of this run several times in its history, though mostly it terminated at Gang Mills. |

Old guard |
Description: |
No not the SD60I, which was almost new then. The semaphore, which has been in place there since the 20s. It will soon fall, as Conrail will single track the line from Elmira to Waverly later in the year. The train is BUAL, a road freight originating at Frontier Yard in Buffalo, terminating in Allentown after a trip down the ex LV via Towanda and Wilkes Barre, and the Lehigh Gorge. Conrail alternated their approach on this train, as it changed its western origin several times over the years, most often running out of Gang Mills. Today's effort takes 128 cars east, and is about to take the connecting track to reach the ex LV at Sayre. |

Signs, signs, everywhere theres signs |
Description: |
Or how things have changed. After the Feds bought out the assets of Penn Central, they morphed into a real estate company. Note who is selling this property. The empty space to the right of the sign is the right of way of the LV Auburn Branch, the line that hosted, among other things, the D&H Sharks for a time on the Sayre turns. Once Conrail took over, that line was abandoned, as was most of the LV west of Sayre. A fair amount of the right of way between Owego and Barton was still there, back in the trees, where it had not been plowed under by the farmers who had the easement revert to them when the line was pulled up. I dont know how much CR actually owned, or if PC was able to sell any of it. Photo is taken from NY 282 in Smithboro, just south of where it intersects with NY 17C. |

Not looking like winter |
Description: |
By Chemung what snow there was seems to have disappeared. Still, this is a great location looking from the NY 427 overpass. |

Downtown |

One of my favorite spots was the shot in downtown Waverly, where the buildings make the shot. Heres ML 401 passing through. |

Long angle |
Description: |
Shooting from far off was not always an option on the Tier-or for that matter, much of the northeast due to the heavy tree cover. Once in a while in certain locations it would work, such as with this TV 202, seen from the NY 17 off ramp to NY 427 at exit 59. . |

Along the rocks |
Description: |
One of the more interesting, but hard to get, shots was this on along the rock ledge west of Waverly. TV 202 is making its way east under O'Brien's Inn, a landmark along the cliff for many years. The hard part about this shot was that you had to park on the shoulder of NY 17 east, an expressway, and climb up a steep embankment, risking getting run off(or ticketed) by the state troopers. The location is just as you approach the exit 60 off ramp. |

ML 440 with lease units |
Description: |
Conrail had a fleet of lease units under a subsidiary called Locomotive Leasing Services that primarily was shared with CN on a seasonal basis. By 1995 these units were coming home, and found their way onto many CR trains. Here one of them teams with a pair of SD40-2s to roll 20 COFC and 52 auto racks east on my 36th birthday. |
