UP power, CP train, holding up a UP train! |
Description: |
Eastbound CP train 470 is powered by a couple of UP units led by this SD70AH. In the background at right is UP's Winona Sub. It joins the CP Tomah Sub in an arrangment dating back to the early 1970s when C&NW acquired trackage rights on the Milwaukee Road to bypass their collapsed tunnel. Just out of frame is UP train LTA-41, the Adams-Winona transfer, waiting on 470 to clear so it can access the CP line and continue west. |

Description: |
Well, not exactly new. C&NW and now UP trains have been utilizing the Milwaukee Road/SOO/CP line from Tunnel City to access Winona, MN for nearly fifty nears now, since C&NW's tunnel collapsed in the early 1970s. The embankment carrying the abandoned C&NW right-of-way is plainly visible in the left background. |

Tight Squeeze at Kilbourn |
Description: |
In 14 years of railfanning the Tomah Sub, I'd never taken a shot at the west end of this siding just west of the Wisconsin Dells before. 199 was already here when I arrived, taking the siding with its tail end hanging out onto the main on the east end. The two trains performed a "saw-by" maneuver, with 288 pulling up to the control point on the main and waiting for 199 to pull clear. |

CP 6644 (D-Day Commemorative Unit) West, empty ethanol train 651 |
Description: |
Birdsey St. at 1512. The number is a reference to the date of "D-Day" (for those who slept through history class, the day the Allies landed at Normandy in occupied France, generally considered the turning point of World War II in Europe), June 6, 1944. The paint scheme is based on that of the RCAF "Spitfire" planes used there. For the commemorative numbering, this engine was moved from its ordinary roster position of 7024. The other four military tribute SD70ACUs are numbered normally 7020-23. The next unit, 7025, and up are in the standard red paint with Golden Beaver logo. |

Surprise Sixties |
Description: |
Well, not a TOTAL surprise since I knew this train was coming at this point, but I didn't when I left the house to get 6644 leading 651. I saw the Facebook heads ups about this one coming west after I arrived at Columbus, to my delight. Empty rock train 9WWA is going to Portage to lay over for the night, tomorrow morning it will head to the Michels Pit at Waterloo for loading. About ten years ago, CP began a rebuild program on their remaining ex-Soo Line SD60s. They were sent to CAD Rail in Montreal, rebuilt, repainted in the plain red with white text scheme, and renumbered with a "2" replacing the "0" in the second digit of the SOO number (6232 was 6032, etc). Then, beginning in 2017, ten were sent to NRE Silvis for rebuilding to "SD60-3." These were numbered 6300-6309. A few of them were among the handful that escaped the initial round of rebuilds and thus still wore their SOO paint and numbers until that time. Others were rebuilt twice in less than a decade, including 6308. The former SOO 6050 did a brief stint as CP 6250. Most (but not all) of the SD60-3s received the "Golden Beaver" scheme after it was re-introduced late in 2017. |

Description: |
The empty train made great time and despite being neck-and-neck with them on Highway 16 by Wyocena I wasn't able to beat them to Popenfus' with enough time to set up. It was only due to their having to stop to line this switch, and my knowledge of the back roads of Portage, that I was able to get these shots. |

All Tied Up |
Description: |
9WWA has caught up to the two other westbounds that were running ahead of it on the Watertown Sub. That's 199's DPU, and 651's tail end buffer car on the right. |

BNSF 9314 East, CP manifest train 288 |
Description: |
East control point/County Highway P at 1644. I've caught several of the BNSF Dash 9s that have been frequenting the CP in Wisconsin of late, nice to get an EMD on the point. I'd seen this train slowly creeping east in the yard, so I drove to the east side of Portage and waited around a while, to no avail. I then drove to the west end in anticipation of 199 and 651's eventual departures, so of course that was when THIS train dialed up the dispatcher to verify his TGBO, give his counts and go. I had to haul @$$ all the way back through town and barely got set up in time. |

UP 7848, rear end DPU on CP 288 |
Description: |
With as much UP and BNSF power as been appearing on the CP of late, I don't really need to drive all the way to those railroads' lines! |

Full Throttle Spitfire |
Description: |
The (by PSR/distributed power era standards) fairly short, and empty 651 train had no trouble quickly accelerating to track speed. 6644's paint scheme was inspired by that of the Royal Canadian Air Force's "Spitfire" planes used during World War II including D-Day. |
