Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range #84
Title:  Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range #84
Description:  Built in 1911 by American Car & Foundry. The following is from a sign on the car: The Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range, owned by U.S. Steel, was primarily a heavy freight road, transporting iron ore from northern Minnesota mines to massive loading docks on the shore f Lake Superior. Passenger traffic was consisted of fewer than two dozen cars and six steam locomotives. American Car & Foundry was and early proponent of all-steel cars, which naturally appealed to DM&IRs owner. Passengers believed that steel cars were safer than wood, though the cars heavier weight generally required use of larger locomotives. ACFs steel cars predated Pullmans by several years. After DM&IR bought rail diesel cars (RDCs) for its passenger service, car 84 was sold to the Marquette & Huron Mountain in Michigan. IRM bought the car from the M&HM, and retuned it to operation after restoration.

Chicago, Aurora & Elgin #431
Title:  Chicago, Aurora & Elgin #431
Description:  Built by Cincinnati Car Company in 1927. The following is from a sign on the car: The Chicago, Aurora & Elgin operated from the Loop to Wheaton, with lines to Aurora, Batavia, Geneva, and Elgin. Unlike most interurbans, power was distributed by a third rail. The 1953 opening of the Eisenhower Expressway, cutting the lines direct access to the Loop, soon led to the end of passenger service. Much of the lines right-of-way is now part of the Illinois Prairie Path. CA&E 431 is one of fifteen similar heavyweight steel cars, whose interiors were far more plush and comfortable than streetcars or elevated car of the same era. It carried commuters in both main and smoking compartments until the end of CA&E passenger service in 1957. The car was purchased by IRM, and arrived at the museum in 1962. It is operational, but is being restored. It is the only steel CA&E car in Illinois.

UP #25086
Title:  UP #25086
Description:  Built in 1942 by Mt. Vernon Car Company. It has now been restored to its as built number. The following is from a display on the car: A caboose served as the office for the trains conductor, who kept track of the destinations of the trains cars using written waybills and switching lists. It also housed one or more brakemen who assisted the conductor, kept watch over the train while moving, and helped perform switching operations. UP 25086 (originally 3786) was one of 100 class CA-3 cabooses, the railroads first all-steel units. It incorporated a desk, a stove for cooking and heating, crew bunks, and an enclosed toilet. It was used throughout the roads Omaha-California system until retirement, when it was acquired by a Kansas railroad museum. An IRM member purchased the caboose from the Kansas museum in 1992, and later donated it to the museum.
